Rothko On Route 66: The Road To Abstraction

May 27, 2009

Hello,
My name is Noah G. Hoffman and for the past 6 years I have been investigating the unknown story of Mark Rothko’s time spent in the southwest. He visited Santa Fe several times and that is where he produced his first abstract images. He also encountered American Indians, including the Hopi, who became a lasting influence on his art and spirituality.
This mostly self funded project  has been presented as open content on Facebook,  the first major art research project in progress to be shared on a social networking site. I am now a blogger as well. My work has been discussed in “Art in America,” and will be cited in an upcoming article, “No Deal, Indigenous Art and the Politics of Posssession,” by Dr. Tressa Berman, a former Smithsonian fellow.
Thanks

Rothko stayed at the La Fonda and created a series based on his stay.
